The Observatory said it may consider issuing the the Standby Signal No. 1 on Monday, as tropical cyclone Saudel may intensify into a tropical depression as it edges towards the South China Sea and eastern Guangdong.

The low pressure system is expected to move across the northern part of the South China Sea and gradually edge closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"According to the present forecast, the remnant of Saudel will move towards the vicinity of the coast of southeastern Hainan Island around this evening, and intensify gradually into a tropical depression," the forecaster said.

Under its combined effect with the northeast monsoon, it will be windier over Hong Kong during the day on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"The Observatory will closely monitor its movement and the changes in local wind conditions, and assess the need for issuance of higher tropical cyclone warning signals," it added.

It said there will be more showers over parts of the territory with squally thunderstorms on Tuesday, urging members of the public to take note of the latest weather information before going out for school or work.
