The Standby Signal No. 1 was issued at 6.10pm on Monday as the remnant of typhoon Saudel intensified into a tropical depression.

The observatory said the signal will remain in force until at least noon on Tuesday.

Saudel is forecast to move across the northern part of the South China Sea, edging closer to the coast of Eastern Guangdong and intensifying gradually Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday.

The observatory said it will assess the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 depending on Saudel's intensity, the distance of its strong winds from the Pearl River Estuary and the change in local wind conditions.

Local winds are expected to strengthen as Saudel edges closer.

Showers will also be heavier in parts of the city on Tuesday.
