President Xi Jinping on Tuesday said multipolarity, independent development paths and the democratisation of international ties represent the right path forward, and called for the authority of the United Nations to be reinvigorated.

He made the comments at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, where he said multipolarity is an irreversible trend.

The president told the heads of SCO member states that hegemony, unilateralism and protectionism run counter to the tide of history.

He pointed out that multilateralism, dialogue and consultation are key to advancing a multipolar world, and said the authority and vitality of the United Nations need to be reinvigorated.

The security- and economic-focused SCO, which began as a group of six Eurasian nations, has expanded to 10 permanent members and 16 dialogue and observer countries in recent years.

The SCO, Xi said, should champion a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalisation, consolidate cooperation in traditional areas such as trade and investment, and expand cooperation in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, digital economy, and green industry.

He urged the SCO to stay committed to taking security as a key goal, and foster an environment of common security.

Xi also noted that the bloc is now a key platform for Eurasian countries to pursue development and tackle challenges. (Xinhua)
