Chief Executive John Lee and top government officials gathered at the memorial garden of City Hall on Thursday morning to commemorate victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

The ceremony began at 8 am with the playing of the national anthem and the raising of the national and SAR flags as the audience stood solemnly.

A police rifle guard unit fired a salute, followed by two minutes of silence.

Lee then led representatives from various sectors in bowing to pay tribute to the fallen heroes.

Among those present were judicial officers, Executive Council and Legislative Council members, representatives of veterans' groups and district councils, as well as members of uniformed groups and youth organisations.

Zhou Ji, director of the Beijing Liaison Office here also attended the ceremony.
