The Observatory on Thursday said it is unlikely that a higher storm signal would be issued as Tropical Depression Saudel continues to weaken.

Acting senior scientific officer Shum Chi-tai said that Saudel was estimated to be about 300 kilometres northeast of the SAR as of 5pm.

“According to the present forecast, Saudel will move across the inland areas of eastern Guangdong tonight and at first tomorrow (Friday), edging closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary,” he said.

“However, it is expected to weaken relatively quickly.”

He went on to say that there is a low chance of strong winds prevailing generally over Hong Kong.

All warning signals would be cancelled when Saudel weakens into an area of low pressure, the forecaster added.
