Vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, CY Leung, on Sunday praised Hong Kong's close ties with Fujian province.

Speaking at a forum looking at ways in which the two places collaborate, Leung said Hong Kong residents of Fujian origin account for about one-sixth of the SAR’s total population and they have significant influence across different sectors in the city.

“Hong Kong has long been Fujian’s largest source of foreign investment and an offshore financing hub,” he said.

“It has an extensive international trade network, as well as professional global trade and logistics services.

“Hong Kong goes global, wins global, buys global and sells global. It is the preferred super-connector for Fujian’s going-global and bringing-in efforts.”

Leung also said Hong Kong and Fujian had signed 28 agreements in 11 sectors including aviation, innovation and dispute resolution in June, offering a solid foundation for further cooperation.

Guo Ningning, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee, said Hong Kong serves as an international financial, shipping, trade and innovation centre.

It is of great significance to deepen cooperation between Hong Kong and Fujian under the 15th Five-Year Plan period, she added.
