Chief Executive John Lee said on Monday Hong Kong is fully committed to furthering its partnership with Central Asian countries, saying the city aims to expand its role as a "super connector" under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Speaking via video at the South China Morning Post's China Conference in Astana, he said increasing merchandise trade between Hong Kong and Central Asia is a clear testament to deepening trade and investment ties.

"Last year, the total merchandise trade between Hong Kong and Central Asia amounted to over US$324 million, representing a solid increase of 27 percent as compared to 2020," Lee said.

"It is a clear testament to our deepening trade and investment ties, and we are fully committed to taking this partnership even further."

Lee said the SAR's unique advantages under "one country, two systems", including its common law system, low taxes and multicultural talent, make it an ideal gateway for Central Asian businesses to access the vast Chinese mainland market.
