Local think tank Our Hong Kong Foundation said the latest Global Innovation Index, of which the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou cluster retained the top spot, reaffirmed the comprehensive innovation strength of the Greater Bay Area.

The result was published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation on Tuesday.

“It reflects not only Hong Kong’s distinctive strengths in basic research, but also the sustained recognition by an authoritative international institution of closer I&T collaboration in recent years between Hong Kong and mainland GBA cities,” the foundation's deputy research director Victor Kwok said.

He said China leads all nations with the most clusters in the ranking for the fourth straight year – showcasing the effectiveness of its policies in science, technology and innovation.

The SAR should lure more global I&T investment to the city and the GBA through the government's HK$10 billion innovation fund and its international capital networks, Kwok added.

Meanwhile, DAB lawmaker Elizabath Quat said the result showed that the GBA has already formed a complete innovation ecosystem encompassing research, transformation and capital.

She said that moving forward, deepening cooperation between Hong Kong and other GBA cities will boost the nation's overall I&T development.
