Chief Executive John Lee on Wednesday expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Hong Kong's first Chief Executive, Tung Chee‑hwa, who died at the age of 89.

In a statement, Lee said Tung's leadership was exemplary in ensuring Hong Kong's smooth return to the motherland and implementing "One Country, Two Systems".

Lee said during Tung's tenure, he steered Hong Kong through the Asian financial crisis and led the city to a robust economic recovery. Lee said Tung's foresight in promoting economic ties with the mainland laid a solid foundation for Hong Kong's competitiveness – and his contributions were exceptionally significant.

Lee said Tung continued to serve the nation as Vice‑Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, and contributed to Hong Kong's prosperity and development after he concluded his tenure as Chief Executive in 2005.

Lee said Tung also played a key role in fostering exchanges between Hong Kong and the international community, raising the city's global influence.

"Mr Tung dedicated his life to serving the country and Hong Kong. I am profoundly grieved by his passing, and his life-long and monumental contributions to Hong Kong will forever be etched on our memory," he said.
