Police have detained three people after a private car sped away from officers in pursuit and collided with multiple vehicles in Mong Kok on Monday.

The trio -- the driver and his girlfriend, as well as a passenger -- were arrested on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Briefing the media on Thursday, Chief Inspector Chan Chi-wa said the driver, a 29-year-old man, was allegedly delivering drugs to the passenger on Monday afternoon.

When officers on beat patrol approached the vehicle after noticing the driver was using his phone in breach of regulations, the man fled the scene by running multiple red lights and crashing into other vehicles.

A police officer and a female passenger whose car was struck were injured. Both were discharged from hospital later that day after receiving treatment.

The runaway vehicle was found abandoned in Hung Hom moments later, with officers recovering two tablets of Viagra, classified as a Part 1 poison.

The driver was eventually apprehended inside a Kwun Tong hotel room on Wednesday. He is accused of furious driving, driving while disqualified, driving without a valid third-party risks insurance, trafficking in dangerous drugs, and possession of Part 1 poison.

"We will continue our investigation into the case, including the driver's mental state while driving; whether he was under the influence of illegal drugs or medication; and whether he is involved in any other crimes. These are some directions of our investigation," Chan said.

The man's 19-year-old girlfriend, a two-way permit holder, was found in the same location and was held for allegedly assisting an offender. Both will appear at Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts on Friday.

The third suspect, a 46-year-old man believed to be the drugs' buyer, was arrested in Mong Kok on Tuesday on suspicion of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

He has since been released on bail.
