Police said a worker died after falling from scaffolding in Sham Shui Po on Friday.

Officers received a report at 11.39am that the worker was believed to have fallen from the structure on the seventh floor of a residential building, and found lying on a platform at 230 Yu Chau Street.

He was unconscious and rushed to Caritas Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead at around noon.

The Labour Department said it deployed staff to the scene after receiving a report of the industrial accident and is investigating the cause.

"We commenced an immediate on-site investigation as soon as we were notified of the accident and have issued suspension notices to the contractors concerned, suspending the erection, alteration, dismantling and use of scaffolds on the external wall of the building," said a department spokesman.

"The contractors cannot resume the work process until the Labour Department is satisfied that suitable measures to abate the relevant risks have been taken."

He added that the department would complete the investigation as soon as possible to identify the cause of the accident, determine the liability of those responsible, and recommend improvement measures.

Should any violations be found during the probe, he said the department would take action in accordance with the law.
