Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Saturday that the Middle East does not need the United States to be a "regional policeman", with the two countries at war and vying for control of the Strait of Hormuz.

"We do not need a regional policeman: the territorial integrity and security of the region can only be guaranteed by its main players and the countries that comprise it," he said on the sidelines of a Brics summit in India during a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

That came as US President Donald Trump said that everything would "work out just fine" when asked whether he could ⁠help move ⁠traffic through ⁠the Strait of Hormuz ⁠in ‌light of fresh ‌concerns about attacks by Iran-allied Houthi forces on Saudi Arabia, including on a pipeline.

"Everything ⁠will work out just fine," Trump ‌said, speaking in Dublin after meeting Irish ⁠President ‌Catherine Connolly.

On the attacks on Saudi Arabia's pipeline, he said Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud is "a very good friend of mine" and that "everything will work out fine".

Trump further said the war would end very soon.

The summit, hoping to bridge divisions between members Iran and the United Arab Emirates over the Gulf conflict, is being held as the United States and Iran resume tit-for-tat strikes in their six-month-old war.

That followed a pause in fighting for much of August, while the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen tightened their grip in the Red Sea region. (AFP & Reuters)
