Commemorative activities have been held across the country on the 95th anniversary of the September 18 Incident which marked the start of Japan's 14-year invasion of China.

During the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression which lasted until 1945, China suffered a total of 35 million military and non-military casualties, accounting for a third of the total casualties of all the countries in World War II.

On Friday, a bell tolled at the square of the 9.18 Historical Museum in Shenyang.

About 1,000 people from around the world attended the commemorative event.

In the city of Yangquan in Shanxi province, university students and faculty members gathered at the Monument to the Hundred-Regiment Campaign, presenting flower baskets and paying respects to the revolutionary martyrs.

And a themed exhibition commemorating the martyrs was on display in Harbin in Heilongjiang province. It featured a curated selection of cultural relics, historical archives and literature.

On September 18, 1931, Japanese troops blew up a section of the railway near Shenyang, then under their control, and accused Chinese troops of sabotage as a pretext for subsequent aggression. (Reporting by Xinhua)
