Xinhua News Agency on Sunday said Tung Chee-hwa is regarded as having been an outstanding contributor to One Country, Two Systems, a renowned patriot, an outstanding social activist and a close friend of the Communist Party of China.
In a report on Tung's funeral, Xinhua said that while Tung was critically ill, President Xi Jinping and other central leaders instructed Beijing's liaison office in Hong Kong to convey their best wishes, and demanded all-out efforts to treat the former chief executive.
Following Tung's death, other leaders, including Premier Li Qiang, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji, expressed their deep grief in various forms.
Xinhua said they also extended their sincere condolences to Tung's family.
The agency reported that Shi Taifeng, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chairman of Tung's funeral committee, delivered a speech at the event, reviewing Tung's life and highlighting his important contributions to the country and Hong Kong.
