The Transport Department on Tuesday urged cross-boundary travellers to plan ahead and avoid peak hours, warning that waiting times for public transport could be longer during the National Day holiday period, with the busiest period expected on Sunday afternoon.

The department said the cross-boundary task force, chaired by the chief secretary, expects a surge in both pedestrian and vehicular traffic at all land boundary control points during the holiday period.

Between the afternoon and early evening of October 4 is forecast to be the peak period for return journeys, with longer waiting times for public transport services.

The department said it had instructed local and cross-boundary public transport operators to step up services during the golden week.

It added that waiting times for the "Golden Bus" shuttle and franchised bus B routes could be longer, and advised passengers to avoid travelling during peak hours.

The Transport Department also reminded the public that traffic at the Zhuhai port and nearby roads has been heavy during peak holiday periods since the closure of a temporary connecting bridge between Zhuhai and the artificial island at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge's Zhuhai port.

It urged travellers to use public transport where possible.
