The Education Bureau on Wednesday said having five Hong Kong universities make it to the global top 100 again in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 demonstrated the strength of the city’s higher education system, and its world-class standards in teaching, research and international outlook.

The institutions which made the top 100 in the Times ranking are the University of Hong Kong, Chinese University, the University of Science and Technology, City University (CityU) and Polytechnic University (PolyU).

In a statement, a spokesperson noted the result also showed that the government’s efforts over the years had laid a solid foundation for the city’s higher education sector.

“The long-standing high rankings of Hong Kong's universities at the forefront of international rankings not only reflect the achievements of the local higher education sector in striving for excellence and scaling new heights,” it said.

“It also bears witness to the government's proactive leadership in guiding the post-secondary education sector to achieve outstanding results through policy measures such as seeking innovation and change, and expanding capacity while enhancing quality.”

Looking ahead, the spokesperson said the SAR’s education sector was “ushering in a golden period of development full of promising potential” under the implementation of Hong Kong’s inaugural five year plan, and it would continue to support institutions to make greater contributions to the city as well as the country.

CityU acting president Lee Chun-sing said achieving the college's best-ever result to rank 70th on the list affirmed the university's commitment to innovation and research.

“CityUHK will continue to embrace a pioneering mindset, deepen international research and pedagogical collaboration, and address pressing global challenges through visionary research outcomes and deep-seated industry-academia-research synergy,” he said.

PolyU President Teng Jin-guang said the institution had been ranked the global top 100 for six consecutive years.

“This fully affirms the university’s formidable strength and international influence in research, teaching, and knowledge transfer, while also reflecting our dedication to building an international academic environment and nurturing innovative talent with a global vision,” he added.

Lingnan University also advanced by nearly 100 places to 257th in the rankings.

“Following our impressive debut in the THE World University Rankings last year, Lingnan has risen by nearly 100 places this year, reflecting the tangible achievements we have made in teaching, research and knowledge transfer in recent years,” its president Joe Qin said.
