Chief Executive John Lee said on Tuesday that the government will strictly enforce the law should any violations be found over suspected improper steel reinforcement works at a house at a luxury residential development in Stanley.

The Development Bureau has launched a probe after media reports alleged the house at One Stanley was built with fewer steel bars than approved.

Speaking ahead of the Executive Council meeting, Lee noted that the incident concerned the professional standards, quality and safety of the city's construction works.

“I attach great importance to the construction quality of building works in Hong Kong,” he said.

“I'm also concerned as to whether the professionals involved in the works have discharged their duties of supervision properly, and whether the contractor has carried out the works in breach of requirements.”

The CE said he has asked the bureau to monitor the investigation as well as construction work standards as a whole.

He added that the bureau will proceed at full steam to submit proposed amendments to the Buildings Ordinance this year to implement tougher punishments and penalties for malpractice and substandard performance.
