A woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect after firefighters rescued a 13-year-old boy who climbed on top of an external air conditioning unit to escape a fire in a Kwun Tong flat on Wednesday night.

The boy was taken to hospital for suspected smoke inhalation, and authorities believe he had been left alone in the flat. His 42-year-old mother was subsequently arrested.

The fire, at Tsui To House of Tsui Ping (North) Estate, broke out at around 8 pm on Wednesday and was put out after around half an hour.

Firefighters are probing the cause of the blaze. Around 70 residents had evacuated the building when the fire broke out.
