A new regulatory authority for medical products in Hong Kong aims to gain international trust and serve patients around the world, according to its controller Li Zili.

The Hong Kong Centre for Medical Products Regulation, which will be established in the SAR by the end of the year, is expected to promote the “primary evaluation” of drugs and medical devices to speed up their clinical application.

Speaking to reporters, Li said the centre’s mission is to protect public health and promote medical innovation.

“We need to build a medical products regulatory authority with comprehensive capabilities – one that is trusted internationally,” he said.

“We should leverage our unique strategic position in medical products regulation – we not only serve patients in Hong Kong, but also keep the world in mind and serve all patients around the world.”

Li said the “primary evaluation” to be established in the future should complement the existing framework and enhance the international community’s trust in the centre through a scientific and transparent regulatory system.

He added the centre would not only become a super connector linking the mainland and the world, but also boost medical reforms and innovations.

Li went on to say that authorities would set up an interdisciplinary scientific team that focuses on clinical review with the aim of accelerating international cooperation.

Meanwhile, Director of Health Ronald Lam said Li possesses practical experience in regulatory affairs and public health and is familiar with international medical products policies.

Lam expressed confidence that Li would be able to reform the system with his experience and leadership skills.
