The mainland's stock market rebounded on Monday after reports said regulators were preparing fresh support measures.

In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index ended up close to 99 points, or 0.42 percent, at 23,393 on turnover of HK$204.84 billion.

The tech index surged 84 points, or 2.25 percent, to 3,839 while the China Enterprises Index rose 23 points, or 0.56 percent, to 7,906.

On the mainland, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ended up 39 points, or 1.08 percent, at 3,638 on turnover of 847.46 billion yuan.

The blue-chip CSI300 Index ended 0.8 percent higher, recovering some ground following an 8.5 percent slump in October, its worst monthly performance in more than a decade as a selloff in technology stocks weighed on sentiment.

The Shenzhen Component Index rose 176 points, or 1.63 percent, to 11,010 on turnover of 936.23 billion yuan while the ChiNext surged 45 points, or 1.87 percent, to 2,458 on turnover of 466.78 billion yuan.

The rally came after media reports that the nation's central bank and securities watchdog would meet brokerages and fund managers on Monday to discuss measures to support capital markets and encourage lending for share buybacks and stock purchases.

Gains were also supported by a surge in trading volumes in exchange-traded funds favoured by the "National Team" of state-backed investors, fuelling speculation of official market support.

Meanwhile, the yuan hit a new more-than-four-year high against the dollar, as investors turned their attention to this week's US midterm elections for their possible impact on global financial markets.

The nation's central bank injected cash into the banking system, as it formally shifted its main policy rate to an overnight lending rate, a move analysts said would ease funding conditions and support the economy.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei share average ended 208 points, or 0.33 percent, lower at 63,081 as memory chipmaker Kioxia tanked and gains by Tokyo Electron and other firms with strong outlooks limited the losses. The broader Topix fell 34 points, or 0.88 percent, to 3,930.

In Seoul, the Kospi closed up 128 points, or 2.24 percent, at 5,859 as strong exports fuelled dip-buying sentiment in the chip sector. (Reuters & Xinhua)
