The Transport Department said the operation of the city's parking meter system had returned to normal following emergency repairs after a breakdown that lasted for nearly four hours on Tuesday morning.
The department said it received a report from the operator at about 8.20am that the system had malfunctioned.
The Digital Policy Office was notified of the incident, the department said, noting that there was no evidence to suggest the system had been hacked.
Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said officials had urged the operator of the parking meters to submit a report as soon as possible.
"I want to reiterate that we attach huge importance to this incident and the system malfunction. I have instructed the Transport Department to require the system operator, Hong Kong Telecom, to submit a report as soon as possible. I hope an initial report can be submitted within the next 24 hours," she said.
