The Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said China was "willing to continue working" with the United States following midterm elections that saw US President Donald Trump's Republicans lose control of both chambers of Congress.

"The midterm elections are an internal affair of the United States," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a regular news briefing in Beijing.

"China is willing to continue working with the US to uphold and implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, strengthen communication, properly manage differences, expand cooperation, and build a constructive, strategically stable China-US relationship based on the principles of respect, fairness, and reciprocity."

In Europe, French Finance Minister Roland Lescure said Trump remained in charge on foreign policy issues despite the GOP's defeats in the midterms, adding that the American leader was unpredictable.

"Either he decides to rise above the fray — acknowledging that changes are necessary, particularly regarding gasoline prices, which directly affect people — and, I might add, he tones down his international involvement; or he does not," Lescure said in an interview on French TV channel BFM.

"Frankly, this is something we will need to keep an eye on in the coming days," he added.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday that voters in the United States had rejected policies that "only impoverish", as well as hate, sexism and climate change denialism following Republican defeats.

Sanchez said the far-right wave that had buoyed conservative movements on both sides of the Atlantic was "collapsing" rather than growing.

In Africa, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said that the results from the midterms would "introduce a new era in world relations".

"We have seen that the Democrats have taken control of the Senate and of the House, and the people of America have spoken," Ramaphosa told reporters. (Agencies)
