Chief Executive John Lee on Saturday urged young people to be curious and courageous as Hong Kong hosts the third Youth Development Summit.

In a video speech for the summit, themed "Pioneering New Horizons, Venturing into the Future", in Wan Chai, he said that when young people are empowered, communities are strengthened and the world moves forward.

Under the the territory's first five-year plan, Lee said, Hong Kong will enhance youth development opportunities, nurturing a new generation to cultivate affection for the country and Hong Kong, a global perspective, and an ambitious and positive mindset.

"We are expanding international exposure through exchanges, internships, and learning experiences," he said.

"Working with our schools, businesses and community partners, we are cultivating an environment where young people can unleash their potential, thrive and shine on the global stage."

For his part, Chief Secretary Eric Chan said he was confident government measures would help Hong Kong's young people serve the needs of the economy, the community and the country.

"That includes participating in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as well as the Belt and Road Initiative," he said. "We will continue to deepen patriotic education for young people while helping them broaden their international horizons."
