Top Beijing officials met the press on Sunday to talk about how the central government plans to improve the people's livelihood. Officials say the mainland job market will be stable this year. The minister of human resources and social security predicts a stable year ahead in the labour market, while the housing minister is optimistic about the property market. China's diplomacy provides much-needed stability in a turbulent world, that's according to Foreign Minister Wang Yi in his press conference at the Two Sessions in Beijing last week. The foreign minister also says Beijing will firmly counter the US amid a trade row between the world's two largest economies. Tycoon expects conservative outlook from developers

A property tycoon has forecast a "conservative" approach from Hong Kong developers in acquiring new plots, saying such firms still hold a lot of unsold units. Far East Consortium chairman David Chiu also says it was a "sensible" decision for the government to not put any commercial sites up for tender this year. Mr Chiu, who sits on the standing committee of the country's top advisory body, spoke to Frank Yung in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the ¡§Two Sessions¡¨ in Beijing:

A green group says a rule banning spectators from bringing water bottles into competition venues at Kai Tak Sports Park should be relaxed to reduce waste. Fleet taxis do not have to charge by meter: govt

The city's brand new taxi fleets will begin service from the end of this month. Commuters reserving a ride from one of five licensed operators can choose to negotiate a fixed fare with the driver, instead of paying by the meter. Transport chief Mable Chan added there will be oversight to ensure operators keep their rates to a reasonable level. Hailey Yip reports:

Concerns grow over sectarian violence in Syria

Two days of clashes and revenge killings in Syria have left more than a thousand people dead, most of them civilians. That¡¦s according to the UK-based war monitoring group, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The clashes, which first erupted at the end of last week, have pitted loyalists of deposed president Bashar al-Assad against the country's new rulers. As Jamie Clarke reports, it¡¦s left the new regime scrambling to contain what has become some of the deadliest violence in thirteen years of civil war.
Cyclone leaves people without power in Queensland

Hundreds of thousands of people in Australia¡¦s Queensland state were without power after a cyclone brought strong winds and heavy rains. Communities in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales were beginning the clean-up on Sunday. There, the storm caused widespread flooding and knocked down power lines and trees.
