Non-urgent A&E visits to cost more in fee revamp

People seeking non-urgent treatment at accident and emergency wards in public hospitals are set to pay more than double the current rate. This is part of the government's revamp on healthcare charges, with the new fees taking effect over three phases starting on January the first. Frank Yung reports:

A family physician says the overhaul of public hospital charges could encourage people to prioritise their overall health instead of solely focusing on disease treatment. Lau Ho-lim, vice president of general affairs at the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians, emphasised the importance of family doctors in helping patients to differentiate between urgent and non-urgent symptoms. This would help them decide whether it is necessary to visit an accident and emergency unit. Lau also told Hailey Yip the fee adjustments could foster a more sustainable healthcare system:
Cats and dogs allowed on light rail from May

Cat and dog owners will be able to travel with their pets on Light Rail trains on weekends and public holidays starting in May. They will be charged HK$99 for a monthly pet pass as part of a trial run. Charlie Chun reports:

Palestinian director freed by Israeli authorities

Israeli authorities have released an Oscar-winning Palestinian director who was detained by the army in the occupied West Bank. Earlier this month, Hamdan Ballal and the other directors of "No Other Land¨ were at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles to accept the award for best documentary film. The film looks at the struggles of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. Ballal said Israeli settlers had beaten him in front of his home while they filmed the assault, before he was arrested. Jamie Clarke has more:

Hong Kong, China's tennis chief says the historic performance by local star Coleman Wong at the Miami Open will serve as a morale boost for the city's next generation of tennis players. The 20-year-old became the first person ever from the SAR to win a Masters 1000 match, reaching the round of 32. Michael Cheng, president of Hong Kong China Tennis Association, also says it's a huge relief that tennis has retained the "Tier A" sport status to avoid a significant funding cut.
