Expert welcomes govt moves to toughen anti-smoking laws

The government wants to fine people who smoke while queuing for public transport or those who smoke at premises, such as theme parks. It's among a raft of proposals unveiled last Friday under the Tobacco Control Legislation Amendment Bill. The administration also plans to ban people from possessing and using alternative smoking products in public by the end of April next year. Judith Mackay, the Director of the Asian Consultancy on Tobacco Control, told Janice Lo she welcomed the new proposals.

Iranian officials order investigation into deadly port blast

Iran's president has visited those injured in a huge explosion that rocked one of the country's main ports. The death toll from the blast has risen to at least 40 with more than 1,200 people injured.
