A lawmaker has expressed concerns over the price tag for a mass transit system to be built in Hung Shui Kiu and Ha Tsuen. As Elvis Yu reports, the worry is that the dedicated roads needed for the green transit system will require additional construction costs.
Govt inspects slopes ahead of wet season

The Geotechnical Engineering Office says it will launch a series of risk management and prevention measures to help ensure that slopes across the city can withstand extreme weather. Officials have concluded a systematic review on significant landslides caused by extreme rainfall in September 2023, including at Yiu Hing Road in Shau Kei Wan and Shek O Road. The office's deputy head Lawrence Shum told Charlie Chun more about the study.
CLP lowers electricity tariff fuel surcharge

The civil service chief has turned down suggestions to allow government workers, who are new parents, to take their childcare leave by the hour. Ingrid Yeung explained this would be difficult to arrange on an administrative level, as Sophie Hui reports.
To Kwa Wan cove concept draws support from govt adviser

The head of the government's advisory body on waterfront matters has expressed support for the Urban Renewal Authority's plans to develop a world-class cove area off To Kwa Wan. On the possibility of hosting outdoor concerts on a barge, Harbourfront Commission chairman Ivan Ho said authorities should be careful when trying to find a suitable location for such events. He noted that similar concerts were held in Wan Chai two years ago. He spoke to Damon Pang:
Non-local doctors boost service capacity at border hospital

The Hospital Authority says waiting times for a non-urgent gastroscopy have become shorter at a hospital near the border, thanks to the hiring of non-locally trained doctors. The average wait at the Central Government Aided Emergency Hospital in Lok Ma Chau has been cut from more than a year, to just two to three months. Hailey Yip has more.
New drug shows promise in eradicating tumours

Chinese University medical researchers say a multinational study they led has found a mainland-developed cancer drug to be effective in treating tumours. They said the drug, D3S001, from company D3 Bio, has shown promise during a phase-one trial involving patients with cancers of the lung, pancreas and colon that are driven by specific gene mutations. The researchers said more than 70 percent of those who took part in the trial saw their tumours shrink significantly or disappear altogether. AI-powered app promises engaging Putonghua lessons

A local think tank has rolled out a project that aims to enhance the Putonghua proficiency of primary and secondary students from Hong Kong and Macau through the use of an AI-powered app and offline activities. The scheme, named "Putonghua Funlearning", is a collaboration between Our Hong Kong Foundation's Academy of Chinese Studies and Tencent Foundation. It's free for schools to participate. Eddie Heung, the academy's communications and engagement senior manager told Janice Lo more about the project.

Israel allows "minimal" food deliveries into Gaza

Israel has allowed five UN lorries carrying baby food and other humanitarian aid into Gaza, after an eleven-week blockade has led to warnings of looming famine. Despite mounting international pressure, Israel's prime minister said the country would control the whole of Gaza. He said the "minimal" food deliveries would continue until the Israeli military and private contractors have set up hubs to distribute aid. That US-backed plan, however, has been rejected by the UN, as Jamie Clarke reports:
Sudan's army chief appoints ex-UN official as prime minister

Sudan has seen the appointment of a new prime minister. The appointment by the military-led government comes two years since the country plunged into civil war. An overhaul of the government is expected after the army retook control of the country's capital from paramilitary forces in late March. Since then, thousands of civilians have returned to their homes, only to be greeted by ruins and the remnants of war. Jamie Clarke has more:
Presidents Xi, Putin 'hold the cards' in Ukraine and tariff wars

Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month hosted President Xi Jinping in Moscow for a state visit, during which President Xi said both nations should counter unilateralism and political bullying in the world, and safeguard multi-polarity and an inclusive economic globalisation. The trip coincided with Russia's 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two. In an address, President Putin paid tribute to what he called the 'courageous people of China'.
