Trump tariffs reinstated following White House appeal

A US federal appeals court has reinstated the Trump administration's tariff plan, reversing a lower court's earlier decision to temporarily block most of the levies from going into effect. The original lawsuit was launched by a group of importers and US attorneys general. Both sides have been asked to respond by early next month. Ahead of the latest development, Beijing once again urged Washington to remove the unilateral tariffs. Frank Yung reports.
Beijing slams US student visa crackdown, labels move 'political'

In a row involving the enrolment of foreign students at US universities, China has slammed a move by the Trump administration to revoke the visas of students from the mainland. The Foreign Ministry called the crackdown on international scholars "political and discriminatory". Vanessa Cheng with that story.
US may back off revocation of Harvard foreign student certification

Washington has seemingly backed away from plans to immediately revoke Harvard University's ability to enrol international students. The US government is set to give the institution time to submit evidence to contest the plans. A previous notice, from a week ago, revoked Harvard's certification which granted it the right to accept students from overseas. That prompted a swift lawsuit from the school, and an equally rapid restraining order from a judge. Jamie Clarke reports:
Wang Yi arrives in Hong Kong ahead of mediation centre ceremony

Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend a signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation today. The country's top diplomat arrived in Hong Kong yesterday, and met the chairman of the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council. Aaron Tam reports:
International mediation centre to boost SAR's appeal: lawyer

A legal expert says the setting up of a global mediation centre can boost the SAR's appeal as an open and international city. CM Chan, a former president of the Law Society, says Hong Kong has all the expertise required for the International Organisation for Mediation, or IOMed. And he believes more international lawyers will come and work here as a result. Mr Chan spoke to Frank Yung about the significance of Foreign Minister Wang Yi's presence at the ceremony, as well as the establishment of the mediation body:
CE pledges support for local talent joining mediation body

The setting up of the mediation body in Hong Kong is expected to further boost the city's international status, and Chief Executive John Lee says the authorities are willing to recommend talent to join the Hong Kong-based organisation. Damon Pang reports.
Authorities to fit sensors onto water mains

The Director of Water Supplies says sensors will be installed within the next two years, to monitor the change of water pressure in water mains. Roger Wong made the comments after a leak from a fresh water main resulted in emergency repairs which forced the closure of parts of Tuen Mun Road, and left residents without water. 'More needs to be done in anti-smoking efforts'

The World Health Organisation has designated Saturday as "World No Tobacco Day". To coincide with the occasion, the Department of Health is launching the "Quit in June" campaign to encourage smokers to stub out the habit. It follows a slew of measures announced by the government to outlaw the possession and use of alternative smoking products in public. Henry Tong, chairman of the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health, told Azam Khan that while the city has been doing well in bringing down the smoking rate, more can be done to further safeguard public health:

New job-matching platform for biomed professionals

A platform has been launched to make it easier for people to find jobs in the biotechnology sector. The introduction of the job-matching platform follows a survey by the Hong Kong Life Sciences Society that showed strong interest in the field. The survey was conducted between November last year and March, covering 330 students and graduates who studied life-science related courses. Three in 10 respondents were extremely positive about employment prospects in biotechnology, the highest level in three years. Ken Wong, the society's executive director, spoke to Vanessa Cheng.

Residents in Switzerland are struggling to absorb the scale of devastation caused by a huge chunk of glacier that buried most of their picturesque village. A deluge of ice, mud and rock crashed down a mountain on Wednesday, engulfing large parts of the village.
