Authorities hail setting up of global mediation body in HK

Secretary for Justice Paul Lam says the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) has the potential to show the world that disputes can be solved by "equal and peaceful means". He was commenting after Foreign minister Wang Yi and dignitaries from around the world gathered in Hong Kong on Friday to witness the signing of a convention which would see the establishment of an international mediation body in the city. The president of the Law Society of Hong Kong says the SAR has sufficient legal professionals to support the establishment of IOMed. More than 30 nations have signed a convention on its establishment. Roden Tong told Janice Lo that he was confident more countries would join the convention:

A local mediator says he envisions that IOMed will solve commercial and investment disputes, as well as disagreement between countries. Iu Ting-kwok, founder and director of the Asia Conflict Resolution Institute, made the comments on the sidelines of a global forum on international mediation that was held after Friday's signing ceremony. He told Janice Lo that the SAR would benefit from the establishment of IOMed:
New liaison office director makes district visits

Chief Secretary Eric Chan says the SAR will tell the world a good Hong Kong story by co-hosting the National Games this year, as well as other major sporting events. The University of Science and Technology has established a research centre to study how technological innovations, such as robots and artificial intelligence, are affecting the business world. The centre's director, Professor Hui Kai-lung, says he hopes the research can provide guidance for future developments. He told Elvis Yu that some Hong Kong and mainland firms say they want to be involved.
War in Ukraine intensifies ahead of talks

On the eve of peace talks, Ukraine and Russia have ramped up the war with one of the biggest drone battles of their conflict. A Ukrainian drone attack has destroyed more than 40 Russian planes deep in Russia's territory, according to a Ukrainian security official. Moscow, meanwhile, has been pounding Ukraine with missiles and drones. The two sides meet later today for a new round of direct talks. Here's Jamie Clarke:
'China, Canada and EU to be hit hard by Trump's latest steel tariffs'

White House officials have been talking up the possibility of more trade talks with China, although there's been no response from Beijing on that. The head of the White House National Economic Council, Kevin Hassett, said US President Donald Trump could begin trade talks with President Xi Jinping as soon as this week. His words come days after Mr Trump announced he would double tariffs on steel imports to 50 percent, with the new levies kicking in on Wednesday. Earlier, Ben Tse spoke to RTHK's Washington correspondent, Simon Marks, and asked him which of America's trading partners would be hardest hit with that tariff rise.
Dozens of Palestinians killed near aid distribution facility

At least 31 Palestinians have been killed and more than 170 injured in gunfire near an aid distribution site in Gaza. There are contrasting versions of events over the deadly incident. Witnesses say Israeli forces opened fire on crowds, while the Israeli military says the opposite. The election is seen as a test of the nation's support for a pro-European approach versus a style of nationalism championed by the previous leader. Hundreds arrested in France as PSG celebrations turned ugly

More than 500 people have been arrested in France, as wild celebrations for a football club winning the Champions League turned violent. Two people have been reported dead, with more than 190 people injured. There was unrest across Paris and beyond on Saturday, after the city's side beat their Italian opponents to win the European trophy for the very first time. Ahead of the match, Paris had deployed more than 5,000 police officers in anticipation of trouble on the streets. Jamie Clarke reports:
