Health officials have given their assurances that Hong Kong's Covid situation will not return to the peak of the fifth wave, when there were tens of thousands of new cases reported each day. A University of Hong Kong epidemiologist says Hong Kong's daily Covid tally may rise above 2,000 cases by the end of this week. But Benjamin Cowling from the university's School of Public Health says he does not think the virus poses much threat to the general community anymore. He said it made sense to slightly tighten anti-epidemic restrictions in the short term to soften the peak of the current infection wave. But he told Samantha Butler that in the long run, Hong Kong should aim to return to normal:

Some 20 million viewers watched the first hearing. Last Thursday, the committee held the third of seven planned hearings. The next one is due for 1pm, US time on Tuesday.
