Outgoing Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, has congratulated the new government officials on their appointments. In a statement, Lam also thanked officials who had served with her over the past five years. Beijing authorities say the new line-up will help Hong Kong integrate nationally and raise the SAR's profile overseas. But they also said deep-rooted problems, such as the shortage of housing, needed to be tackled - as Todd Harding reports:

The vice-president of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macau Studies, Lau Siu-kai, says the Legislative Council will become a breeding ground for future politicians. CHP: Fifth wave peak will not return

Health officials have given their assurances that Hong Kong's Covid situation will not return to the peak of the fifth wave, when there were tens of thousands of new cases reported each day. The comments came despite the city seeing the daily Covid caseload remain in the four digits for the fifth day in a row. Joanne Wong reports:
Expert predicts over 2,000 daily cases by weekend

A University of Hong Kong epidemiologist says Hong Kong's daily Covid tally may rise above 2,000 cases by the end of this week. But Benjamin Cowling from the university's School of Public Health says he does not think the virus poses much threat to the general community anymore. He said it made sense to slightly tighten anti-epidemic restrictions in the short term to soften the peak of the current infection wave. But he told Samantha Butler that in the long run, Hong Kong should aim to return to normal:
Macau conducts mass testing over new cases

Macau has launched a mass Covid testing exercise after 21 coronavirus cases were found in the SAR. All schools have been closed until further notice as officials warned the city was facing "extremely high" risks of community transmission. Wendy Wong reports:
America keeps close eye on Capitol riot hearings

Americans have been tuning in to the televised House committee hearings and the investigation by lawmakers into the Capitol riot - when Donald Trump's supporters stormed Congress on January 6, 2021. Some 20 million viewers watched the first hearing. Last Thursday, the committee held the third of seven planned hearings. The next one is due for 1pm, US time on Tuesday. Samantha Butler asked RTHK's Washington correspondent, Barry Wood, about whether the hearings had revealed any new information:
