People can now vote online for their favourite local sport stars in the annual Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards.

Candidates include swimmers Siobhan Haughey and Ian Ho; fencers Cheung Ka-long and Vivian Kong; table tennis star Doo Hoi-kem; tennis player Coleman Wong; snooker player Ng On-yee; and breakdancer Sze Ka-yam.

Nominated combinations also include the well-known badminton mixed doubles Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet.

The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee said there are 118 nominees and nominated teams, involving over 400 athletes.

The committee's honorary secretary-general Edgar Yang said the number had increased by 20 percent when compared with the previous year.

"Thanks to our athletes' efforts, Hong Kong has made great strides in sports. At the same time, because of the excellent performance of our athletes over the past year, competition for this year's awards is fierce," he said.

The public can cast their vote online until March 17.
