Sports fans told RTHK on Friday they hope to see more Olympic qualifying tournaments in Hong Kong so they can watch both local and international teams compete at home.

Crowds gathered at Victoria Park for the first day of the FIBA 3x3 basketball Olympic qualifying tournament, which will run until Sunday when the teams that qualified for the Paris Olympics will be announced.

Angus Hon, who took the day off to support the Hong Kong team, said it’s an opportunity of a lifetime to watch an Olympic qualifier in the territory.

“I’m pretty happy because I play basketball myself, but of course these players are a lot better. I love seeing so many different teams come together to play. There is so much passion and sportsmanship here. No one is getting overly upset on the court, so it’s worth coming,” he said.

“I mostly came to support the women’s team because it will be difficult for the men to qualify. This is very representative. If they are able to represent Hong Kong, China, it will be our honour.”

Another basketball fan Calvin Yuen said the atmosphere was incredible and he loved watching the fans cheering together.

“I think the government should host more of these events to encourage more people to come to them and also promote sports. These events are definitely attractive to watch,” he said.

“I played basketball when I was little at school, but when it comes to competition, I didn’t realise how fast paced 3x3 is, which makes it fun to watch.”

Some people said having an Olympic qualifying event in Hong Kong would promote sports and active living in the city.

“I didn’t even know this was the Olympic qualifying [tournament], but it’s great for Hong Kong. I feel like Hong Kong is mainly about school and academics, so it’s great this pushes sports just like North America,” said Doug Wong, who is a basketball lover.

Meanwhile, some visitors came for the street food and activities hosted alongside the tournament.

“It’s good to host these events so that people can get involved in sports and basketball. There are speed running and boxing activities here which shows people the importance of exercise. I also really encourage people to be active,” said Sherman Ngan, who is a personal trainer.
