World number three Aryna Sabalenka and three-time Grand Slam runner up Ons Jabeur say they will not compete at this year's Paris Olympics in order to prioritise their health.
"Especially with all the struggles I've been struggling with the last months, I feel I have to take care of my health," Sabalenka told reporters.
The tennis events at this summer's Games take place on clay between July 27-August 4, meaning a switch back to clay immediately after the grass season and before the hard-court run up to the U.S. Open.
Belarus' Sabalenka, 26, lost to Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva in the French Open quarter-finals earlier this month.
She is set to return to action this week in Berlin, having suffered from a stomach illness at Roland-Garros.
"It was the worst experience I had in my life on court," she said.
Tunisian Jabeur, 29, underwent surgery last year on her right knee.
"After consulting with my medical team regarding attending to the Olympics in Paris, we have decided that the quick change of surface and the body's adaptation required would put my knee at risk and jeapordize the rest of my season," Jabeur said on her social media accounts.
"Unfortunately I will not be able to participate in the 2024 Olympics," she added. (AFP)
