The SAR’s footballers had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Guangdong in the first leg of the Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup on Wednesday evening.

The only goal for the SAR, playing away at Yuexiushan Stadium in Guangzhou, came in the 38th minute from captain Stefan Pereira.

The SAR team made a run down the left flank and the ball was eventually crossed to Lau Ka-kiu in the penalty area.

The Lee Man forward then passed it to Pereira, who took a shot that deflected off a defender, and found its way to the back of the net.

The Hong Kong side had another chance to score after the break, as Alexander Jojo headed the ball from a corner kick but was denied by the post.

Trying to respond, the home side ramped up their attacks in the second half and it paid off.

Jojo was penalised for a handball in the box in the 74th minute, and Guangdong substitute Jiang Zhipeng nailed the penalty to equalise.

Neither team managed to score any more goals.

The return leg will be played at Hong Kong Stadium next Wednesday to decide the aggregate winner. RTHK will broadcast that match live.

Last year marked the return of the competition for the first time since 2019, and Guangdong won it in a penalty shootout.
