Coleman Wong's bid for a first individual medal at the World University Games ended on Monday, after the Hong Kong, China tennis star squandered a one-set lead against his opponent to go out of the last 16.

Wong, ranked 173rd in the world and the top seed in the men's singles tournament, had maintained a perfect 4-0 record entering the tie against Britain's James Connel.

The SAR player continued his strong run with a 6-0 thrashing in the opening set.

But the tables turned when Connel forced a decider after winning the tiebreak 7-6.

It was a similar story for the final set, as Wong couldn't keep up with his opponent and was eliminated after losing 6-7 once again, ending the two-hour, 27-minute contest.

Wong was a bronze finisher in the mixed doubles at the last Games in Chengdu, when he teamed up with Cody Wong.

The 21-year-old only competed in the singles campaign this year, while the SAR were represented by Yandy Shek and Dasson Chan instead in the mixed doubles competition.

The pair, both aged 20, were beaten by China's Li Zongyu and Xiao Linang 6-2, 6-0 in the last 32 on Monday.
