Local tennis star Coleman Wong on Sunday led Hong Kong, China to stun fifth-seeded Uzbekistan 3-1 at the Davis Cup, to the delight of the capacity home crowd at Victoria Park.

With the sides level entering the second day of the World Group Two tie, Coleman Wong teamed up with Kevin Wong in the doubles and won 7-5, 7-6, winning the tie-break by the score of 9-7.

The SAR's top-ranked player then won the final set 6-2, 6-2 against Khumoyun Sultanov for the 3-1 victory.

This means the SAR advances to a playoff round next February, for a spot in Group One.

Coleman Wong said after the game that this was not an easy victory, and he's thankful for the fans' support, especially in the intense heat.

"It means a lot. Because I always play individually, so I always go around and I always play alone," he told a post-match press conference.

"So to have a crowd like this and to be able to play at home, it's something that we always wanted to do. It means a lot to us."

Coleman Wong went on to say that he hopes the team can play in the Kai Tak Sports Park in future, which can accommodate even more spectators.

Kevin Wong, for his part, said despite only having one week to train, he and Coleman had established a considerably strong bond. He also pointed out that Coleman had improved significantly from last year, when the SAR lost to Ecuador at the Davis Cup.
