HK swimmers add to medals haul at Asian Youth Games

Hong Kong, China have extended their medal tally at the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain, picking up three golds and three silvers in freestyle, breaststroke, and medley relay finals on Thursday.

Their latest results in the pool takes the SAR's medal tally at this year's edition of the competition to 28, good for sixth in the table.

Gilaine Ma, 17, topped the podium in the girls' 200m freestyle final after clocking a record time of 2:00.98, finishing 0.08 seconds faster than the national team's Chu Zihai.

It was Ma's second medal at the Games, having won bronze in the 50m freestyle on Tuesday.

Yang Fuzhen rounded out the podium in third with a time of 2:01.95.

Casper Tsui claimed Hong Kong's second gold of the day in the boys' 100m breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:02.09 to set a Games record.

He finished more than a second faster than his SAR teammate Mok Sum-long, who took silver.

The SAR rounded out their medal haul with a silver in the mixed 4x100m medley relay, courtesy of Tsui, Ashley Chan, James Lau and Li Sum-yiu.

"The swimming team continues to demonstrate remarkable determination in various competitions," said Philip Mok, honorary deputy secretary general of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China.

"Team Hong Kong has reached a historic new high on the medal table," he added. "As our athletes prepare to compete on the final day of the Games, I hope they will make the most of their valuable journey."

Hong Kong, China had already won medals in athletics, road cycling, and table tennis, as well as e-sports and triathlon.
