Hong Kong, China's men's foil team on Sunday struck gold at the Fencing World Cup in Paris, outlasting the United States 45-38 in a tightly-contested final.
The quartet of two-time Olympic gold medallist Edgar Cheung, reigning world champion Ryan Choi – as well as Cheng Tit-nam and Mike Lam – prevailed over their world number two opponents en route to their first team gold of the 2025-26 season, which began last November.
The SAR advanced to the final after sweeping aside Qatar, Poland, the Russian delegation competing under a neutral flag, and Japan.
But early jitters saw Hong Kong trail the Americans 4-10 in the gold medal bout. The SAR soon erased their deficit, before both teams traded leads with Hong Kong holding a slim 40-38 advantage entering the final round.
In a rematch of the individual foil final the previous day, Choi exacted revenge on Alexander Massialas by beating the American 5-0 to seal the team gold for Hong Kong, winning the tie 45-38.
This marked the SAR's second foil team gold at the World Cup, having also triumphed on home soil in 2024.
It was also their best performance so far this season, after finishing fifth in Spain in November and 13th in Japan last month.
Japan rounded out the podium in Paris after edging hosts France in the bronze-medal match.
