The world's top snooker stars have returned to Hong Kong, with the crack of the break-off signalling the start of the World Grand Prix at Kai Tak Arena.

This marks the second time the city has hosted the tournament.

The top 32 players will vie for the championship and crucial ranking points from February 3 to 8.

The field includes marquee names like Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump – both of whom have become Hong Kong residents through one of the city's talent attraction schemes.

Speaking at the tournament's opening ceremony on Tuesday, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law promised spectators a spectacular event.

"Over the next five days, they will light up the arena with thrilling, edge-of-your-seat battles - each one brimming with drama, tension, and sheer brilliance," she said.

"By hosting this Grand Prix, we are not only contributing to the legacy of snooker in our community but also elevating the sport's local profile and reinforcing Hong Kong's reputation as a premier destination for major international sporting events."

Meanwhile, Simon Brownell, CEO of the World Snooker Tour, expressed his delight at the tournament's return.

"The enthusiasm of the Hong Kong audience has left a deep impression on all the players. The hospitality and off-court activities arranged by the organisers have made the athletes feel truly welcome and at home," he said.

The first day’s round of 32 saw intense action, with China’s Xiao Guodong scoring a notable victory over England's Kyren Wilson.

Fellow Englishman Mark Selby advanced by defeating Ireland’s Aaron Hill, while Elliot Slessor prevailed in an all-English clash against Stuart Bingham.

China’s Zhou Yuelong also moved forward, overcoming Scotland’s Stephen Maguire.

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s standout fixtures, fans can anticipate a thrilling match as Ronnie O'Sullivan faces England’s Joe O'Connor, while China’s Zhao Xintong takes on Scottish player John Higgins.
