Hong Kong has set its sights on a return to Davis Cup World Group I for the first time in 33 years, but must first overcome top-seeded Finland in a World Group I Play-off tie to get there.

The winner of the clash will advance to World Group I in September, moving one step closer to the coveted World Group Qualifiers.

Captained by Yu Hiu-tung, the Hong Kong, China team features a young squad of six: Coleman Wong, Kai Thompson, Wong Tsz-fu, Nicholas Cheng, Jack Cheng and Walter Tam.

With an average age of just 18, 21-year-old Coleman Wong is the team’s most experienced Davis Cup campaigner.

"This time, we have a very young team. They don't have much experience at the Davis Cup, except for Coleman," Yu said.

"We try to give more advice on how it feels when playing the Davis Cup. We will see what happens during the tie."

Despite their youth, the team carry momentum from recent successes.

Coleman Wong made history last month by reaching the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Tennis Open, the first local player to do so at an ATP Tour event.

Meanwhile, Kai Thompson, the city’s top-ranked junior, advanced to the final eight in the Australian Open junior championships.

Yu acknowledges the challenge ahead but believes home support could be decisive.

“We know that our opponents will be tough, so we are depending on the home crowd energy to push us to victory,” he said.

Finland, led by captain Jarkko Nieminen, arrive as favourites but are taking nothing for granted. Nieminen said the team arrived on Saturday to acclimatise and prepare.

"Like always, we try to focus on playing as well as possible and we try to scout and find the right tactics before or during the match," he said.

"The main focus is always to get in good shape and hopefully our players can play their best tennis during the weekend, and then we will see how far [that takes us] and if it is enough or not."

The stage is now set at Victoria Park from February 7 to 8.
