The local Football Association said on Thursday that both the men's and women's team for Hong Kong, China, would be competing at the Asian Games in Japan this year.

That put paid to reports that organisers had changed entry requirements for this year's Games despite the men's team having made history at the previous games in Hangzhou by finishing fourth.

Organisers were reported to have linked eligibility for participation to results at the Under-23 Asian Cup for the men's team and the Asian Cup for the women's side.

The football association said it had been in touch with organisers over this matter and received an official notification from the Olympic Council of Asia on Wednesday confirming the local teams' entry.

"We are pleased the teams can take part and welcome the decision of the Olympic Council of Asia," said Eric Fok, who chairs the Football Association of Hong Kong, China.

"This will benefit Hong Kong football and help players gain major-tournament experience."

He went on to thank the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, for its help and co-ordination and said the teams would press fully ahead with preparations for the Games.
