The Hong Kong, China men's foil team on Tuesday made history by reaching their first-ever final at the Fencing World Championships.

Edgar Cheung, Ryan Choi, Harris Ho and Leung Chin-yu defeated fencers from the United States 45-43 in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at AsiaWorld-Expo, as Hong Kong hosts the prestigious tournament for the first time.

Two-time Olympic gold medallist Cheung helped the local team overcome an early deficit with a 9-2 win in the third bout, giving the SAR a 15-12 lead.

Hong Kong led 40-38 going into the last bout.

Choi lost the first three points in the final bout, but he came back strong after a medical timeout and fought his way to a 5-5 draw, securing the win for the SAR.

Hong Kong, China will face top-seeded Italy for the gold medal at 7pm on Tuesday.

It will be the SAR's first medal at this year's Fencing World Championships, and its first team medal following a bronze in 2023.
