CPPCC session ends with calls to focus on 'big picture'

China's top annual political gathering is drawing to a close. The parliamentary session, the National People's Congress, will conclude on Tuesday in Beijing, while the session of the top advisory body -- the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference -- wrapped up on Monday. CPPCC chairman and state leader Wang Huning called on delegates to focus on the "big picture" and deepen unity. Frank Yung has more from Beijing:
Deliveroo to quit the HK market

Online food delivery firm Deliveroo says it is leaving Hong Kong for financial reasons, after operating in the SAR for nine years. Its UK-based parent company says Deliveroo's service platform will run until April 7, and that it would sell some assets to rival Foodpanda. Two hundred full-time staff with Deliveroo will lose their jobs. Damon Pang reports:

Unionist lawmaker Lam Chun-sing says some 30 self-employed riders from Deliveroo have contacted his group asking for help, after the online food delivery firm announced it was leaving. The chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Labour Unions says those riders mostly worry about whether they'll take home the same pay if they accept an offer to switch to a new platform. Govt welcomes HK$200m donation to support AI

Hong Kong's finance and technology ministers have welcomed a HK$200 million donation by property developers to support the city¡¦s generative artificial intelligence development. The funds will be used to support the Hong Kong Generative AI Research and Development Centre and to develop an app for a locally-developed generative AI tool. Chloe Feng reports:
China warns against US shipping levies

The Foreign Ministry in Beijing says a plan by Washington to levy fees on Chinese ships will hurt global supply and industrial chains and will not have the effect of revitalising the US shipbuilding industry. The response came after a draft executive order from the Trump administration revealed plans to charge fees for docking at US ports on any ship that is part of a fleet that includes Chinese-built or Chinese-flagged vessels, in a bid by the White House to try and resurrect the American-ship building industry. Tanker collides with cargo ship in North Sea

A tanker carrying jet fuel has collided with a cargo vessel off the east coast of England. The collision ignited a blaze and multiple explosions and forced both crews to abandon ship. Thirty-six mariners are ¡§safe and accounted for¡¨. However, the search has been called off for one of the cargo ship's crew who went missing. Jamie Clarke has more:
Wall Street sells off on US recession fears

There has been a large sell-off in US stocks as concerns about tariffs - and a possible federal government shutdown - led to fears the American economy could be heading into a recession. All three major US indexes saw sharp declines. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell four percent, its biggest single-day percentage drop in 2.5 years. The S&P 500 fell 2.7 percent - its largest one-day drop since mid-December. The Dow Jones fell 2.1 percent. On Sunday, President Donald Trump declined to comment on the negative market reaction to his on-again, off-again tariff actions against the biggest US trading partners. Mark Carney prepares to become Canadian PM

Fresh from a landslide victory to become the leader of Canada¡¦s ruling Liberal Party, former central banker Mark Carney has met with Justin Trudeau and said the formal handover of power will be quick. Trudeau is still prime minister until Carney formally takes over the role. Canadian newspapers have said that could happen on Thursday or Friday. Jamie Clarke reports:

America¡¦s top diplomat says he sees promise in Ukraine¡¦s proposal for a partial ceasefire to end the three-year conflict with Russia. The comments come ahead of talks in Saudi Arabia between US and Ukrainian officials. Kyiv is expected to propose an aerial and naval truce with Russia during the negotiations on Tuesday. Meanwhile, there are talks elsewhere on the creation of an international security force for Ukraine. The force, which has so far been shrouded in secrecy, would aim to dissuade Russia from launching another offensive after any ceasefire in Ukraine comes into effect. Jamie Clarke has more:
Two arrested for gang rape in Indian tourist spot of Goa

Police in southern India have arrested two men over the alleged rape of an Israeli and a local woman. Sexual assaults on women have become familiar in India. Police recorded more than 31,000 cases in 2022 alone, a 20 percent increase from 2021. Sexual violence has been under the spotlight since the brutal 2012 gang rape and killing of a 23-year-old student on a New Delhi bus. This most recent incident, which occurred last Thursday, also led to the death of an Indian man. Jamie Clarke has more:
