Trump weighs US involvement in Israel-Iran conflict

US President Donald Trump has kept the world guessing as to whether the United States will join Israel's bombardment of Iranian nuclear and missile sites. Israel and Iran have again exchanged fire for a sixth day. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday that his country was committed to "diplomacy" but would continue to act in "self-defence". As Jamie Clarke reports, fear has gripped the Iranian capital Tehran, with empty streets, shuttered shops, patchy mobile phone signals and scores of residents fleeing.
Close to 800 Chinese nationals evacuated from Tehran

Xia Baolong arrives for five-day inspection tour

The Beijing official overseeing Hong Kong affairs has arrived in the SAR on a five-day inspection tour. Xia Baolong, the director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, is here to learn about the latest economic and social developments. During his visit, he's scheduled to attend a forum marking five years since the enactment of the national security law. Jobless rate edges up slightly to 3.5 percent

HKTDC sees export slowdown in second-half of 2025

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council has forecasted that the city’s exports will retain a three percent growth this year. This comes as the council announced the results of its latest Export Confidence Index and its mid-year trade review. Noting there was a minor contraction in the current export performance and the expectation index, Irina Fan, the council’s director of research, said the slight reduction was expected because of trade tensions between the US and the mainland. She spoke to Matthew Hung about how anxiety over America's trade policy had impacted Hong Kong's export performance.

Officials probe several hundred reports of tenancy abuse

Housing minister Winnie Ho says officials are following up on about 700 reports of public housing tenancy abuse. Almost 4,000 reports have been received since January when authorities rolled out the Report Public Housing Abuse Award scheme. The government has approved allowing autonomous vehicles in Tung Chung, as part of a trial scheme that began half a year ago. Apollo Go, a subsidiary of mainland tech giant Baidu, has been running 10 cars around the airport. As Damon Pang reports, the Transport Department says the trial has made significant progress.
China to open digital yuan operations centre

The People's Bank of China will set up an "international operations centre" for the digital yuan to boost the currency's global influence. Central bank governor Pan Gongsheng also said policymakers would push forward the yuan's foreign exchange futures trading in Shanghai to provide a new-risk hedging tool for investors. A mainland financial market veteran says the planned establishment of the new global operation centre for the digital yuan will help boost the adoption of the renminbi on a wider scale. Speaking in an RTHK interview, Marco Sun, director and chief financial market analyst at MUFG Bank (China), said the digital yuan had gradually become popular among residents and businesses on the mainland and the Shanghai centre would assist in increasing the number of cross-border transactions for the yuan. British survivor of Air India crash attends brother's funeral

The sole survivor of last week's Air India plane crash has helped lay his brother to rest at a funeral in western India. Several people from the town, which lost 14 others to the crash, came out for the funeral. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London began losing altitude just seconds after take-off last Thursday. Emergency workers have pulled more bodies from the rubble of a nine-storey apartment building in Kyiv which was demolished by a Russian missile earlier this week. It raised the death toll from the latest attack on the Ukrainian capital to 28. Moscow has launched a summer offensive on parts of the roughly 1,000 km frontline, as well as intensify long-range missile attacks that have struck urban residential areas. As Jamie Clarke reports, the mood was sombre in Kyiv.
