Cathay Pacific says it plans to buy 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft, and has secured the right to purchase up to seven more. Hong Kong's flag carrier says the deal would allow it to connect passengers directly between the SAR and its global long-haul destinations. The deal was announced as Cathay posted a one percent increase in interim profit. Hailey Yip has details.
Scientist says HK must do more to guard against extreme weather

An earth scientist says Hong Kong has to do more to guard against the effects of climate change, as more frequent and intense weather events are expected to occur. That's after record rainfall lashed Hong Kong on Tuesday... during which the black rainstorm warning was in force twice, with one of them lasting almost 12 hours, the second longest on record. The Observatory confirmed that, at 369 millimetres, it was the city's highest daily rainfall in August since records began in 1884. Sophie Hui has more.
Half a million visitors expected at annual Food Expo

The Trade Development Council, which is organising the annual Food Expo, says it hopes the event will attract half a million visitors, matching last year's attendance. The five-day fair opens next Thursday at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai and will include halal food. Lauren Kee reports.
HK eighth in smart city index

Hong Kong has come in eighth out of 73 cities in a smart city index. The ranking, compiled by Polytechnic University researchers, considered how factors such as infrastructure or the use of technology improved living standards. The findings were disclosed at the fourth International Conference on Urban Informatics which opened on Wednesday at the university. Seven mainland scientists will share this year's Future Science Prize which was first introduced in 2016. As Charlie Chun reports, the awards honour remarkable achievements by researchers from the mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

US to double tariffs on India to 50pc

US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order hitting India with an additional 25 percent tariff over its purchases of Russian oil. That brings the total tariff on Indian imports to the United States to 50 percent --among the highest on any trading partner imposed by Washington. Jamie Clarke with the story:

US President Donald Trump says there's a "high probability" that he'll hold a summit with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin "very soon" - after what he described as "highly productive talks in Moscow between his special envoy Steve Witkoff and the Russian leader. China warns Israel against escalating Gaza conflict

Twenty Palestinians were reported killed and dozens injured when a supply truck overturned as hundreds of people waited for food in central Gaza. The latest tragedy came as China expressed concern over reports that Israel plans to step up its military offensive and take over the entire Gaza Strip. Geng Shuang, China's ambassador to the United Nations, urged Israel to halt what he called dangerous actions. Meanwhile, Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour commented on Israel's anger over the treatment of hostages held by Hamas.
Wildfire 'bigger than Paris' raging in France

France's biggest wildfire of the summer has eclipsed the size of Paris and is still spreading. The blaze, in a Mediterranean region near the Spanish border, has left one person dead. Hiroshima marks 80 years since atomic bomb explosion

Japan on Wednesday marked the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima with a call to world leaders to avoid the horrors of nuclear conflict. At 8.15am, the city and the nation observed the time when the United States dropped the world's first atomic bomb, killing 140,000 people and destroying Hiroshima during the Second World War. Light sabre from Star Wars among iconic movie props auctioned

Now a story for the film fanatics, as some of cinema's most recognisable props are heading to auction. Props and collectibles from franchises such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings have been exhibited for a preview in London, ahead of Propstore's entertainment memorabilia live auction next month.
