Authorities step up mosquito control amid chikungunya threat  Listenfacebook
Hong Kong's imported Chikungunya cases stand at four after no new cases were recorded on Thursday. Food and Environmental Hygiene workers carried out mosquito control measures in Ap Lei Chau and Tsing Yi, where some of the patients who came down with the mosquito-borne disease reside. A paediatrician says people who have been to places where there are chikungunya fever cases should apply mosquito repellent for 14 days after returning to Hong Kong to prevent the spread of the disease locally. The comments were made by Mike Kwan, president of the Asian Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases. He told Janice Lo that while the risk of transmitting the virus in the community is very low, a small outbreak is possible if there is a rise in imported cases.
AI-powered device promises to predict mosquito population  Listenfacebook
Researchers from Lingnan University say they've developed a solar-powered device that can kill two birds with one stone. Apart from eradicating mosquitoes, it can also predict the insect's proliferation. Professor Paulina Wong, who led the research, says the contraption is equipped with a standard mosquito lamp and a monitoring station to collect data such as the number of mosquitoes killed, temperature, and rainfall. She told Elvis Yu that an AI model will then analyse the data and predict if the mosquito population would go up in the next few days.
HK brands and products urged to seize opportunities on mainland  Listenfacebook
The Trade Development Council, or TDC, says Hong Kong brands and products can make use of online platforms to expand their business on the mainland. It says the "Hong Kong Brand" is popular among mainland consumers. The TDC surveyed about 2,200 mainland consumers in the middle-income bracket or above, and found that they gave SAR products an average rating of 8.7 out of 10. The council's principal economist, Wing Chu, told Charlie Chun more about the characteristics of products from Hong Kong.
Ombudsman calls for better guidelines to deal with dripping ACs  Listenfacebook
The Ombudsman has called for clearer guidelines on dealing with complaints about dripping air-conditioners at public housing estates, saying a lack of detailed instructions has led to cases being inconsistently handled. The watchdog also said the authorities should better monitor the property management of public estates that had been outsourced to private firms. Frank Yung reports.
Govt told to make parks more pet-friendly  Listenfacebook
The DAB is calling on the government to make parks in residential areas more pet-friendly. The party's district councillors suggested that a start can be made at Caine Lane Garden in the Mid-Levels. Central and Western district councillor Noel Shih said the proposal has received the support of 300 residents in the district. He said pet-friendly parks should also adopt the prototype of a new dog toilet to improve hygiene. Shih spoke to Lauren Kee:
Xinjiang suspension bridge accident leaves five dead  Listenfacebook
Five people have been killed and 24 injured in a suspension bridge accident in Xinjiang. They all fell off the bridge when it tilted after a suspension cable snapped. As Wendy Wong reports, officials are investigating the accident which happened shortly after 6pm on Wednesday.

In a potential breakthrough to the three-plus years of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Kremlin confirms that a meeting is in the works between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart, Donald Trump. The meeting, which could take place next week, follows multiple rounds of talks between Moscow and Kyiv in the past months which have failed to yield concrete results. The World Health Organisation says around 12,000 children under five in Gaza are suffering from acute malnutrition, and hunger-related deaths are rising. The latest Unicef figures show the number of hospital admissions for malnutrition almost doubled from June to July. Even as global attention has turned to starvation in Gaza, aid groups say the water crisis is just as severe. Jamie Clarke has more:
