The government is being urged to provide comprehensive vision screening at primary schools. In a screening of 700 primary pupils, the Hong Kong Association of Private Practice Optometrists found that one in five who did not wear glasses failed vision tests. According to the group's projections, eight to nine percent of lower primary students will develop severe myopia, or short sightedness. The association's vice chairwoman, Julia Li, told Lauren Kee that managing myopia is crucial for preventing diseases that may lead to blindness.

Privacy office raps retailers over data breaches

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data has issued enforcement notices to three retailers. This comes after separate cybersecurity incidents compromised the personal information of over 130,000 customers and employees. One breach involved Japanese fashion retailer Adastria. A hacker reportedly used a current employee's administrator credentials to access its platforms provided by a third-party vendor from an unknown overseas IP address. The hacker downloaded information on orders, while the data of over 59,000 customers was leaked. Privacy Commissioner Ada Chung spoke to Hailey Yip about the case:
Police renew online scam warning as cases surge 25pc

Police are warning the public to be on the alert for scams involving online investments, after cases jumped 25 percent to more than 2,200 in the first half of this year. That accounted for roughly one-seventh of all technology-related crimes. In one case, a retiree lost HK$30 million of her savings. Senior superintendent Carmen Leung from the force's Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau, told Hailey Yip that scammers primarily use messaging apps and social media to target victims:

A Ukrainian man has been arrested in Italy on suspicion of coordinating the 2022 attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany. The news marks a breakthrough in an episode that sharpened tensions between Russia and the West. Seen by both sides as an act of sabotage, the explosions severely damaged three pipelines carrying gas from Russia to Europe. An investigation has been launched into the on-air death of a French video streamer, known for extreme challenges. His channel, on the Kick live streaming platform, had regularly shown videos of the man enduring violence. A French government minister said the man had been "humiliated and mistreated for months". City's overall consumer prices rise by 1pc in July

Hong Kong's inflation remained "modest" last month, with the composite consumer price index - a key gauge tracking overall consumer prices - rising by one percent year on year, smaller than the 1.4 percent increase seen a month earlier. Chloe Feng reports.
