Hong Kong has climbed to fourth place to reach its best position so far in a world talent ranking by the Swiss-based International Institute for Management Development. As Damon Pang reports, the SAR rose five spots from last year, while also taking the top spot in Asia.

The global rankings show that the government's efforts in attracting outside talent are bearing fruit, according to Roy Ying, who co-chairs the advocacy and policy research committee at the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management. He also told Damon Pang that a drop in property prices has made the SAR more attractive.

New licence rules to deter people from abandoning cars

Fireworks to light up Victoria Harbour on National Day

A major fireworks display will light up Victoria Harbour on October 1, to mark National Day. The show, featuring more than 30,000 fireworks, is themed "Victoria Harbour Fireworks Shine Across the Motherland". The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce of Hong Kong is sponsoring the event. Its chairman, Jonathan Choi, told Hailey Yip that the 23-minute display will pay tribute to local culture, and highlight the accomplishments of the motherland:
Xi calls for closer cooperation with European Union

President Xi Jinping has called for closer cooperation and improved communication between China and the European Union. This came in a meeting in the capital with Portugal's visiting prime minister, who urged China to use its close ties with Russia to press for peace in Ukraine. Wendy Wong reports.
Israel strikes Hamas officials in Qatar

Israel has launched an air strike against the headquarters of Hamas' political leadership in Qatar, as the group's top figures gathered to consider a proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Hamas says its leaders survived the attack, but six people were killed in the strike. US President Donald Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided on the strike, and he feels badly about the location of the attack. Jamie Clarke reports:
Shelling and hunger as residents flee siege of Sudan's al-Fashir

Now to Sudan, where escaping residents have described the siege of al-Fashir, where people have resorted to eating animal feed. Sudan's Rapid Support Forces have tightened around the city, the final holdout of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region of western Sudan. Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has begun serving a one-year jail term -- in another blow to his family which has influenced politics for two decades. This follows a Supreme Court ruling that he had improperly served a previous jail term in a private hospital instead of in prison. Lau Hon-ting reports.

Nepal's prime minister has resigned, as anti-corruption demonstrators defied an indefinite curfew. Those on the streets clashed with police, a day after 19 people died in violent protests triggered by a social media ban. At its annual event in Silicon Valley, Apple has just unveiled its latest line-up of the flagship smartphone, the iPhone 17. While the tech giant continues to make healthy profits, it's also been under intense pressure to keep up with its rivals in terms of innovation and artificial intelligence.
