Govt working non-stop so HK can return to normal: CE

The government has announced the resumption of schools, and people are expected to be back at work on Thursday as life in Hong Kong gradually returned to normal after it was battered by Super Typhoon Ragasa. Both the Transport Department and the Highways Department have activated their emergency coordination centres, and officers were closely monitoring road conditions on major routes to ensure smooth operation of public transport and safety of road users. Flights in and out of HK to resume on Thursday

The Airport Authority is now trying to clear a backlog of flights at Chek Lap Kok, after Ragasa hit the city. All inbound and outbound flights on Wednesday were grounded, but are now resuming gradually. Chris Au Young is the authority's general manager of terminal and passenger experience.

More than 100 people were injured after Super Typhoon Ragasa lashed Hong Kong, bringing hurricane-force winds and heavy rain to the city. The number 10 signal was in force for the second time in three months, this time lasting nearly 11 hours, before the storm moved away and no longer posed a threat to the city. Elvis Yu reports.
HK escaped brunt of Ragasa: expert

A former assistant director at the Observatory says Hong Kong was fortunate to have escaped the worst effects of Ragasa, as the super typhoon could have come even closer to the city. Leung Wing-mo, spokesperson for the Meteorological Society, pointed out that the maximum wind speed recorded in Hong Kong on Wednesday was not as strong as that during Super Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018. While the number 10 signal was in effect for nearly 11 hours -- the second longest on record -- Leung says that should not be used as the indicator of a typhoon’s severity. He spoke to Elvis Yu.
'Tseung Kwan O recovery may take a month'

Tseung Kwan O was another area hit hard by the typhoon, and district councillor Christine Fong says it could take up to a month for recovery efforts to complete. She told Hailey Yip that the damage in the area was severe, with waves crashing into the coastline reaching as high as four metres. She said strong winds also shattered windows and caused significant flooding at the waterfront and nearby parks and walkways.

Expert warns of tree hazards after Ragasa

A tree expert has warned people not to stand or walk under trees in the coming week, saying some may have been damaged by Typhoon Ragasa but not yet fallen. Chiu Siu-wai, a retired professor from the Chinese University's School of Life Sciences, said even small gusts of wind or minor vibrations could cause them to collapse. Hundreds of trees across the city were brought down by the storm, including some very old ones. Professor Chiu told Wendy Wong many trees in Hong Kong grow too large for the limited underground space available, leaving their root systems unable to anchor firmly in severe weather:
17 killed in Taiwan after lake barrier gives in

In Taiwan, at least 17 people were killed and more than a dozen others are missing when a decades-old lake barrier burst, after Super Typhoon Ragasa pounded the island with torrential rains. Raymond Yeung has more:

Israeli forces advance further into Gaza City

Israeli forces have neared the centre of Gaza City, as Hamas fighters reportedly re-group amid fears of intense street-to-street fighting. Hundreds of thousands have left the city in northern Gaza, but many have hesitated because of security risks and widespread hunger. Medics said at least 50 people were killed across the enclave on Wednesday. Meanwhile, activists taking part in a flotilla seeking to break the Israeli blockade on the Palestinian territory say that some of their boats have been attacked by drones. Jamie Clarke has more:
Kimmel makes emotional return to air

American late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has returned to the air. His show was suspended by the ABC network last week, following criticism of his remarks about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. But the programme was reinstated following a backlash against ABC's parent company, Disney. Kimmel insisted he wasn't trying to joke about the killing. At least two killed in shooting at Dallas ICE office

A gunman has killed at least two detainees and wounded another at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Dallas, Texas. The suspect has also died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
