Unionist lawmaker Lam Chun-sing says in the event a worker gets hurt at work under adverse weather like a T10 signal, the employer may have to bear legal responsibilities if there were no clear instructions given on whether the employee had to work or not. A climate scientist has hailed China's latest pledge to cut emissions as "one of the most significant steps" taken in response to the climate crisis. In a video address to the United Nations climate summit, President Xi Jinping announced plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by seven to 10 percent by 2035. Professor Benjamin Horton, dean of City University's school of energy and environment, said the country's efforts in cutting emissions will have a "significant impact" globally as it is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in jail. He's been found guilty of criminal conspiracy over attempts to raise campaign funds from Libya. Sarkozy was acquitted by a Paris court of all other charges against him. But the ruling means the former president will spend time in jail even if he appeals - a sentence much harsher than many had expected. Jamie Clarke reports:
Trump signs order declaring TikTok sale ready

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order declaring that his plan to sell TikTok's US operations to American and global investors complies with a law that says the short video app will be banned unless its Chinese owners sell it. Trump has delayed enforcement of the law until December 16 as he tries to line up investors and win approval from Beijing.

HK unveils blueprint to transform into FIC hub

Hong Kong has unveiled a road map aimed at transforming the city into a global trading centre for fixed income and currency, or FIC. The blueprint was released by the Monetary Authority and the Securities and Futures Commission. Ten initiatives are listed, ranging from attracting investors such as family offices and corporate treasury centres, to offering more tokenised FIC products. HKMA chief executive, Eddie Yue, said the measures are aimed at further consolidating the city's already mature FIC market.
More decumulation products needed in HK, economist says

The Hong Kong Institute for Monetary and Financial Research has called on the financial industry to offer more so-called "de-cumulation products" in response to growing market appetite for low-risk investment schemes. Sometimes called pension products, they benefit retirees who no longer have a regular income. The institute is a research unit under the Hong Kong Academy of Finance. The academy's chief executive, Enoch Fung, told Chloe Feng about the findings of its recent survey involving more than a thousand local residents.

Nobel experts are not betting on US President Donald Trump for this year's Peace Prize, as he so covets. Many have lobbied to win the Nobel Peace Prize, which will be awarded on October 10, but no one has done it more intensely than Trump. He's used his platform as US president repeatedly to argue he should win the award, including a speech he made at the UN General Assembly earlier this week. Jamie Clarke reports:
